The only place not visited on our 3 Park VIP pass is Sea World which is just north of Surfers Paradise. Got to be done, so off we went this morning arriving about 10.30am and not expecting too much. As with the other parks, there were areas closed for repair so they would be ready for their summer. We still find it odd talking about 'their summer' when it was about 26 degrees today and beautiful sunshine! It's forecast to be hotter tomorrow!
Anyway, as you walk into the park the first thing you see is a large lake with an island covered in theatrical comedy buildings. The area is fenced off with building site style fencing and notices apologising for any inconvenience but saying it is undergoing repairs.
We looked at the map of the site and see that there is a water park. Then we see it's seasonal and is not open at present because it's being repaired. All beginning to sound like a waste of money!
The first thing open is the penguins so we go in for a look. Lots of beautiful King Penguins both in and out of the water:
After leaving the penguins we wander through the park and see two roller coasters, one of which has what look like jet skis you sit astride and get thrown around at great speed. Fantastic fun. The park is looking better and better. After several goes we wandered further into the park and to the dolphin show. Calum realised that one of his favourite shows 'H2O' is filmed here and points it out. Both Jen and Les have seen the show and realise he's right. It turns out to be one of the best shows we've seen. Les even goes as far as to say it is the best thing he's seen on the holiday. The dolphins are almost magical, it really is wonderful to see:
After the dolphins we visited the Polar Bears. Unfortunately only one of them was out today and he was sleeping in the shade so was hard to see. Still incredible to see a Polar Bear. Then to the rays in there shallow tank which allows you to stroke them. Then the shark tanks with all types of shark and rays and sturgeon and tropical fish not to mention people having the opportunity to dive with them. Unfortunately to dive you need to be a trained diver!
We then found a log flume which we all went on. We then discovered that children over 10 can go snorkelling with the smaller sharks and marine creatures in the adjoining tank to the main shark tank. They are only separated by a glass sheet so you still get pretty close to the bigger sharks. Sadly it was too late for Calum to have a go. We have a go on the Monorail and the sky lift and then decide to go. We've been here all day and time has flown, there is so much to do and see it's a fantastic place. We really want to come back. We then realised we are passing nearby on our way to Noosa tomorrow. We still have our VIP passes and can book Calum in to swim with the sharks/sea life tomorrow. All booked and back we come tomorrow.
Calum and Les with the Pelicans
On the way back to the hotel in Burleigh Heads we stopped at 'Putt Putt' a crazy golf course with 3 different 18 hole courses. After the 3 courses, Les 1st, Calum 2nd, Jen 3rd, one ball lost, Les's ball, thrown in the bushes by Calum by accident after Les got a hole in one!
Great fun. We all love the Gold Coast. Les loves Surfers Paradise, Jen loves Burleigh Heads, Calum loves both and all three have decided to start saving to return as soon as possible!
Off to Noosa tomorrow, via Sea World.
